Great 8 Homeroom Classes

The 1965/66 yearbook shows Aleda Hookstra was also in Division 60. I’m unsure if I have named someone incorrectly or if she was away the day the photo was taken. Any help from other Grade 8, Divison 60 students is greatly appreciated.

Above is a photo of Mr. Braverman’s homeroom class Division 60 taken in September 1965 by a fellow teacher, Doug Symons, who took homeroom photographs of Grade 8 classes.

Mr. Braverman said, “This homeroom class was very special because it was the only co-educational class in Grade 8. For a number of years at Jayo students in Grade 8 were grouped homogeneously. My homeroom class was sometimes known as the Latin class because they not only took French but Latin as well. The students were very high achievers academically. Many of these students when they were in Grade 11 and 12 were leaders of clubs and other school organizations.  Also many were involved in the music program and athletics. I was starting my second year of teaching at Jayo and I was only 23 years old. I have no idea why I was given this group of students for homeroom. This class was also one of my Science 8 classes that I taught that year. The following year ’66 –’67 all Grade 8 classes were heterogeneously grouped.”

Grade 8 Yearbook Pages from 1965/66

The following pages represent the twelve Grade 8 homerooms at John Oliver in 1965/66. This John Oliver yearbook— sometimes referred to as an annual—was simply called JAYO 1966. There are 414 Grade 8 student pictures this year. Two Grade 8 divisions made up one page and when the book was open you could see four divisions at once. When closed the book is letter-sized and in landscape format. When open it is 22 inches long but with a stiff middle binding that doesn’t allow for easy, flat pictures to be reproduced. My apologies to those whose pictures are caught in the middle of the binding and your photos are somewhat rounded.
